Photo-A-Day Challenge | Kelly Dillman Photography

So, as many of you already know, I was a teacher back before I started this photography business! I taught Elementary School art for about 4 years and I still LOVE art, teaching and kids! Like everyone else right now, I’ve been trying to find a way I can help you all and figure out what I can offer up to everyone during this crazy time. So, since photography and art and teaching are my talents, I came up with this Photo-A-Day challenge for the next two weeks! It’s a fun, educational and creative activity to keep you and your kids inspired and creating while we’re all home-bound the next few weeks. (PHOTO CHALLENGE BOARD IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST – right click and save to your photos!)

I intended this for both parents and kids (probably best for upper elementary-high school but it could be very interesting in with little ones too as long as they can at least take a photo on a phone! :)). I have a strong belief in being a historian for our children and future generations and think photos – no matter now insignificant you might think they are right now – are SO important and so valuable. I used to look at my mom’s yearbook all the time when I was little and thought it was the coolest thing ever to see her as a teenager and see what the city I grew up in was like back then. I was obsessed with looking through this huge picture book we had from LIFE magazine over the last several decades and seeing real life photos of not just important events but every day life. And of course, I could spend hours looking at our old family photos – memories of relatives that have passed and getting a quick memory of a glimpse of just our everyday playing in the backyard mean so much to me!

So don’t discount doing the same for your own family! I know we all take photos with our phones every day but this challenge is intended for you to really take those photos in a more meaningful way. These themes in the challenge are intended to inspire you to be more creative and shoot with more intention and pay more attention to “everyday” moments.

For your kiddos that are interested in photography and might want to participate, the same lesson applies. To get them started, visit websites such as the Digital Collection of the Photo Archives at the University of Louisville https://digital.library.louisville.edu and the LIFE magazine Photo Collection on Getty Images: https://www.gettyimages.com/collections/lifepicture to see examples of documentary photography. Talk about how the photos make them feel and why (what aspects of the photo make them feel that way – the light or dark quality of it, the emotions of the people, etc.) , talk about why somebody might have taken a certain photo and why it could be important.

Then go over the themes on the Photo Challenge board and briefly talk about what each one means to them. Then they can try each day to take a photo of something in their daily activity that represents that theme. Some of the themes are more abstract and require a little more thought and others, even though they seem simple (such as “Me”) can be done in a more creative manner (don’t just take a selfie for “Me” – what else can you put in the photo that represents yourself?) These themes all leave plenty of room for interpretation and just like any other form of art, there is no right answer!

I would love for you to share your photos or your own kiddos photos with me by tagging #KDPphotochallenge and tagging me @kellydillmanphoto. I would love to share some on my stories and anyone who shares their photos with me will be entered to win a $25 gift card! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!! Feel free to message me with any questions also! Happy shooting!!

Sunflowers!! | Family Photos Louisville KY | Kelly Dillman Photography

Sunflower mini session time is one of my absolute favorite times of the year! It’s so crazy how these beautiful flowers are only blooming for like three weeks so we always take advantage and get in as many shoots as possible in them before they’re gone. I just think they’re not just gorgeous, but fascinating – most of the blooms are bigger than your head! Not to mention the kids love them and they make for the most fun, fairytale- like photos 🙂 I had to share this session because they brought their puppy along and the cute factor went up about 800%!

If you haven’t signed up yet, you still have ONE more chance this year to get in on the sunflower fun – I still have a few openings available for mini sessions at the huge sunflower field at Evans Orchard in Georgetown, KY on Sunday, August 4 so contact me at kellydillmanphoto@gmail.com or 502-767-4101 asap to reserve your spot!

Three! | Louisville Ky. Photographer| Kelly Dillman Photography

It’s really amazing how quick three years goes by! I took this little one’s newborn photos and her first year and 2 year old photos and I still can’t believe she’s already 3! It’s such a fun age too – they say so many funny things and have such cute reactions to things! We brought her favorite toy- her bubble blower lol but she couldn’t wait to see the horses at Blackacre! Then when we got to the goats, she didn’t want to leave! I love doing photo sessions here because kids have so much fun with the animals and you don’t have to force any smiles! 🙂 I can’t wait to see what adventures we’ll have at her 4 year shoot! 🙂

Cutest smile ever!
This face…!!! Pure joy!! 🙂
Waiting patiently for the horses to come see us

Don’t worry – mom was right behind her and edited out – she was perfectly safe! 🙂
My fave for sure!

Baby J Newborn | Louisville Lifestyle Newborn Photography | Kelly Dillman Photography

When I was a teenager, all of my friends talked about how many babies they wanted to have one day. Strangely, I was the one that always said I didn’t want any and now as of 3 months ago, I have FOUR of them!! 🙂

I absolutely ADORE babies and that is an understatement. (Even babies that aren’t human – I cried watching a National Geographic show about baby seals the other night…my husband says it was probably those new mom hormones… lol) But I think they are THE sweetest, most beautiful, amazing things in the world and would have 100 if it were easier, less expensive, less painful, less…well, a lot of things! 🙂

Needless to say, I love, LOVE my job! And as a newborn mom myself, I especially love “lifestyle” newborn sessions like this one that include the whole family, sessions that focus more on welcoming this new addition into your world and your home and your life. Capturing how your older babies are so in awe and so protective of this new little person and how anxious they are to hold him and feed him and how they could just sit and stare at him all day. My goal is to capture not just sweet photos of baby, but also images that capture the love the baby brings to your family’s world 🙂

Mother’s Day |Kelly Dillman Photography| Louisville Family Photographer

So this was one of those shoots where all of the elments come together to create magic! Beautiful weather, amazing light, just the right amount of wind, GORGEOUS subjects and a kiddo that wasn’t camera shy AT ALL lol 🙂 When we’re lucky enough to have all of those things, it makes it so much easier for me to focus on capturing the emotions and moments!

With Mothers Day coming up, and having two teenagers AND a brand new baby, I’ve been feeling ALL the mommy feels lately…my heart swells every day watching my big girls grow up and seeing my little one trying to figure things out and learn every day.  Seeing my twins as big sisters and seeing the baby so happy to be with them makes my heart explode.  But also seeing how quickly they all change every day and really knowing as a mom the hard truth about how fast time really does go by and not being able to stop it all at the same time is so heart wrenching sometimes!

So all of this was on my  mind going into this shoot – I wanted to capture their mommy-daughter relationship. I wanted to capture all of the little things that you don’t really realize you need to remember until your kids are as old as mine. The way your kids look at you like you’re the funniest thing ever when you make a goofy face, how hard they squeeze your head when they kiss you, the look of pure safety and comfort on their faces when they close their eyes and nuzzle into your chest when they’re trying to get warm, their pudgy little hands holding onto you…the way theyreally truly love you without end and how in their eyes you are completely flawless and perfect…to me, being a mother is truly the BEST thing to be.

I hope I was able to capture this for this mama 🙂 And I would love to do the same for all of you moms out there too! I know so many of us hate to be in pictures but it’s so important – what I would give to be able to go back and tell myself to get over my confidence issues and just have some photos taken like this!

P.S. I also have gift certificates available! Prettily packaged and ready to gift (forward to your husbands for *hint hint*! 😉 )

I hope to see you soon!!
