Photo-A-Day Challenge | Kelly Dillman Photography

So, as many of you already know, I was a teacher back before I started this photography business! I taught Elementary School art for about 4 years and I still LOVE art, teaching and kids! Like everyone else right now, I’ve been trying to find a way I can help you all and figure out what I can offer up to everyone during this crazy time. So, since photography and art and teaching are my talents, I came up with this Photo-A-Day challenge for the next two weeks! It’s a fun, educational and creative activity to keep you and your kids inspired and creating while we’re all home-bound the next few weeks. (PHOTO CHALLENGE BOARD IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST – right click and save to your photos!)

I intended this for both parents and kids (probably best for upper elementary-high school but it could be very interesting in with little ones too as long as they can at least take a photo on a phone! :)). I have a strong belief in being a historian for our children and future generations and think photos – no matter now insignificant you might think they are right now – are SO important and so valuable. I used to look at my mom’s yearbook all the time when I was little and thought it was the coolest thing ever to see her as a teenager and see what the city I grew up in was like back then. I was obsessed with looking through this huge picture book we had from LIFE magazine over the last several decades and seeing real life photos of not just important events but every day life. And of course, I could spend hours looking at our old family photos – memories of relatives that have passed and getting a quick memory of a glimpse of just our everyday playing in the backyard mean so much to me!

So don’t discount doing the same for your own family! I know we all take photos with our phones every day but this challenge is intended for you to really take those photos in a more meaningful way. These themes in the challenge are intended to inspire you to be more creative and shoot with more intention and pay more attention to “everyday” moments.

For your kiddos that are interested in photography and might want to participate, the same lesson applies. To get them started, visit websites such as the Digital Collection of the Photo Archives at the University of Louisville https://digital.library.louisville.edu and the LIFE magazine Photo Collection on Getty Images: https://www.gettyimages.com/collections/lifepicture to see examples of documentary photography. Talk about how the photos make them feel and why (what aspects of the photo make them feel that way – the light or dark quality of it, the emotions of the people, etc.) , talk about why somebody might have taken a certain photo and why it could be important.

Then go over the themes on the Photo Challenge board and briefly talk about what each one means to them. Then they can try each day to take a photo of something in their daily activity that represents that theme. Some of the themes are more abstract and require a little more thought and others, even though they seem simple (such as “Me”) can be done in a more creative manner (don’t just take a selfie for “Me” – what else can you put in the photo that represents yourself?) These themes all leave plenty of room for interpretation and just like any other form of art, there is no right answer!

I would love for you to share your photos or your own kiddos photos with me by tagging #KDPphotochallenge and tagging me @kellydillmanphoto. I would love to share some on my stories and anyone who shares their photos with me will be entered to win a $25 gift card! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!! Feel free to message me with any questions also! Happy shooting!!

Big Sister! | Louisville KY Newborn Photographer & Family Photographer | Kelly Beach Photography

2016-03-16_00012016-03-16_00022016-03-16_00032016-03-16_00042016-03-16_00052016-03-16_00062016-03-16_0008I’m so excited to finally have my blog back up and running! Turns out it had a pretty bad malware infection :/ Such a pain! I have to give credit to Scott at NetCrafted.com – he is the genius who got us back up and running in one day at an awesome price! Photographer friends – if you have a WordPress blog and ever have any issues – you MUST contact him! Thanks Scott!!

So now I get to get back to showing you all of the fun photo sessions that I’ve been up to! I posted a preview of this session on Facebook but I couldn’t resist sharing the rest. This sweet little baby has the most excited, doting older sister (who I also got to photograph as a newborn!) She was so anxious to get pictures made with her baby sister πŸ™‚ And she stole the show when it was feeding time – I adore the pictures of her putting the baby wrap on her head like a wedding veil and asking her daddy if he would marry her – melted my heart! πŸ™‚

I just know these little ladies are gonna have lots of fun together as they get older and I’m excited to get to capture the first year of it!

C turns 2! :)

This kiddo’s birthday photo session was so much fun for me and I’m sure for this little man too! It pretty much epitomized a kid’s perfect summer day – laying around in the grass, playing a little baseball, blowing bubbles, and eating lollipops as big as your face! πŸ™‚

Do you remember Lucas’s newborn photosΒ with his dad’s guitars? Β We kept with the music theme for his 6 month photos too – you can imagine how I about died when his mom and dad pulled this little Lucas-sized piano out of the car!! It was such a perfect prop and he just banged away on it! Β As soon as he can write, I’m getting his autograph – guarantee ya he’ll be famous some day πŸ™‚ I love this family’s style and it was fun breaking away from the trees and flowers to go urban too!

Still catching up on sessions from last fall and I have to say this was a favorite! It didn’t feel like work at all – just fun πŸ™‚ I miss when my girls were this age and we could go out and just play in the leaves and have tickle fights just take a walk on pretty fall nights like these guys did πŸ™‚ I know there will be plenty of fun summer things to do but I already can’t wait for October again!
